I agree that the fast change may have made the difference. My boys eat Fromm Chicken a la Veg. I don't think the protein is higher than Royal Canin. It's a moderate protein food -- 23%, if I recall correctly. There is a significant difference in ingredients which may be affecting your pup.
Make sure your pup is getting the correct amount too. Compare the calories per cup of the two foods and adjust accordingly. Getting too much or too little can cause soft, runny stools.
