Hopefully, there is enough blood/nerve supply in those bones that the cutting back to bleeding bone for fusing will generate a good spate of new bone growth and fuse those bones in a good, substantial unit that will remain stable.
Is his doctor really a top notch surgeon who has done this surgery successfully for years? If not, I would find one who specializes in these type malunion corrections. Don't let just any orthopod do this procedure. 

This is soooooooo very important for this type of surgery to be successful! I join everyone else in prayers for your husband....I can imagine how discouraging it must be to keep hearing, "gotta go back in.....".
