I'd start slow. Leave the crate open for him to leave if he wants to and have a bed near it. Also, keep your door either closed or gated so he can't leave the room. Once he is sleeping out of the crate, in his bed (or other choice spot) and not leaving you any surprises in the morning then go ahead and open/ungate the door. Good luck! =D
