Diet has no exclusive relationship to periodontal disease. My 12 year old had barely any tartar or oral disease when he had his first dental a few months ago. He has eaten a soft home cooked diet his whole life. On the other hand, my 1.5 tear old is at the dentist today having his teeth cleaned. Our veterinary dentist told me that there is no rhyme or reason to periodontal disease. So the best thing you can do as an owner is to brush your dog's teeth every day and have regular professional cleanings under anesthesia when your dog is in need. Baby teeth do smell until they come out. There isn't much you can do. After that though, stinky breath means something. Dogs don't have bad breath unless there's an issue.
