I had to replace by old modem about 2 years ago but maybe it's been longer. I hadn't thought it may be "aging" again but maybe so. Nothing lasts past 2 years hardly in DSL! At least not with good old AT&T!!! That's a thought I didn't even have but you are probably right.

Would a bad modem make just typing online really hard to do or could that be I need to reset - or whatever it's call the drivers - for the keyboard and/or touchpad? I search for updates a lot but there have been none. In Windows 98 and XP, I reset/reload them all the time but in Windows 7, I'm suddently not sure how to do it. Just seems my laptop keyboard isn't as sensitive as it once was even after it got much much much better since the DSL reset. It's always something. Sigh.
