My first recommendation would be a Macbook Pro. There is one that is $1,199.

For under $800, Toshiba. I got my Toshiba Satellite series laptop for $399 at Best Buy. I had to buy the Microsoft Office programs separately. This is my second Toshiba laptap. The first lasted 10 years.

I need both for business and I love both. The Toshiba is probably tougher. It survived being slammed accidentally to the floor.
