Heartworm is a devastating disease and these worms attack the heart of the dog. It's a very painful and costly disease to treat, so most people give the medicine, that helps prevent it. Mosquitos carry the larva and a dog has to get a blood test before the medicine can be given. It kills the larva before they can reach the heart. Maybe because you live in Alaska, you don't have a problem with mosquitos. Some of our Canadian member’s dogs have gotten the disease. You might want to check with your vet.

Heartworm transmission has not been documented in Alaska; however, there are regions in central Alaska that have mosquito vectors and climate conditions to support the transmission of heartworms for brief periods. American Heartworm Society | Canine Guidelines |
