It is common for shelters not to look at the information they have about missing dogs. They have so many volunteers and part time workers that change from day to day that you just cannot count on shelter staff to call you if your dog shows up. Call daily. Better yet if you have someone who can check daily or every other day you will be more likely to get your dog back if he shows up at a shelter.
