Sad Advantix

Hi all,
Chicalina and I are new to this forum, so please excuse any mistakes I may make when addressing all of you. We inherited our baby girl from a woman who could no longer care for her, we instantly fell in love of course. She weighs 5.6 pounds, is healthy and active. Unfortunately, not being a seasoned dog person, I have twice given her a full dose of heartworm medication, both times she was very sick and hospitalized. We stopped using heartworm meds, and at the same time stop using flea/tick poisons. My vet convinced me to give her a half doze of Advantix to ward off fleas, claiming she'd be fine. Well, she feels OK (other than having that awful, poisonous metallic breath), but there's a spot on her back, just below her shoulder that won't stop twitching, like it's a nerve gone crazy.

I'm sick that I feel I've been bamboozled into poisoning her once again. After this I'm going back to my homeopathic vet, I swear!

Please share your thoughts about:
the twitching/should I bring her to her vet?
heartworm and flea poisons-are they ever safe for small dogs?
which alternatives do you use?

Thanks for your input!
