Thanks everyone.
So it's tradition for the unmarried youngsters to bow before elders to show respect and give well wishes of health, wealth and prosperity. the elders will in turn give red envelopes of money as gifts to the youngster.

my parents were cracking up over my getting bunjee to bow three times ("sit" then "down" then again two more times.) then give well wishes (bark). i wish i brought my video cam to record that. haha.
