Did the vet do a dental? It sounds like his teeth need work, and if he's having problems with his teeth, he's probably not chewing his food. If he's swallowing his food whole, it could cause indigestion even though he would normally tolerate the food. I personally think the vet should do a dental and pull any bad teeth and once his mouth has healed you will know more about how to help him. It also may help to soften his kibble with warm water, if you ever feed him kibble.
