There are a few schools of thought about spaying. I had a Maltese puppy several years back that contracted Pyometra (a uterine infection) during her first heat at 6 months. She almost died so after that I always got females spayed before the first heat. Gracie was a different story. She was a little squirt and I was concerned about having her spayed when she was till so small. I waited until she was about a year old before I had her spay done.

You do need to check for retained baby teeth to see if they are going to need to be removed. Talking to the vet is always a good idea. Make sure the vet has experience doing surgery on small dogs and that they understand possible Yorkie issues.
