I recommend a slicker brush on mats, that's seems to work for my dogs. I spray the conditioner in the brush before brushing them. Also His black and tan coat was puppy hair. It will not grow back in that color. He will be lighter colored. Using clippers has nothing to do with his coat texture. He will be what he will be, clippers or not. Sounds like you have some training to do with the grooming. Make sure you brush every area of his body everyday, down to his skin and through every layer. Now that his hair is shaved off and no more mats, it might be a good time to start teaching him good grooming habits. A little a day with treats rewarding his good behavior.
