I think it was because back when so many women were at home with their kids or otherwise they had a real convience in a sales person comming by especially offering in home demos.

I think probably 80% of my friends are consultants for businesses with in-home parties, whether they are candles, spices, beauty, even financial advice!
My in-laws did the door-to-door selling in the 80's. Even back then, Rainbows cost around $2000. I'm not sure what they would be today! DH said his mom would use it to clean up the carpets if the kids threw up on them

I still don't think I'd spend thousands though. If I had more thousands to spend, I'd use them on tropical vacations
