I think the risk to humans is a lot less then our risk of many other things. I feel like preventing fleas and ticks is very important because fleas are miserable for dogs and can make them sick as well as ticks with all the illnesses they carry. There are many "natural" flea and tick products that are just as dangerous and some even more so then Frontline or Advantix. Not using a preventive is not an option for those of use with very active dogs who love to be outside and are outside a lot.
