The best coat is a silky coat which is not going to be as thick as a cottonier type of coat. Silk coats vary, just like human hair does. Some are denser than others. Most dogs with a silky coat have floor length by 2 years of age, but have seen some not be to the floor until 3 years on a slow growing silk coat. Either is totally proper.
I'm sure your boy would look wonderful with long coat, but they also look adorable cut down, so it's just a matter of preference.
