Jolene had a similar problem when I first got her...lots of brownish black stuff coming out when I cleaned her ears. Turned out to be yeast, which was treated with drops from the vet. I routinely pluck the hair inside the ear canal and clean them with a cotton pad and gimborn ear cleaner that I get at petsmart for about $4 a bottle. Lasts a while. We have had NO problems since.
