A good detangler and a metal comb work well. If you use a good conditioner when you give him a bath and keep a spray detangler around for between baths you can keep him tangle free if you comb him daily.
You can also try using pure corm starch on a dry mat. Work it into the mat and start working on it with a metal grooming comb.
