My Jilly would never accept the puppy I bought once it got bigger than she and when she shut down her life, never played, kept her ears back all the time, wouldn't eat and was losing coat, chewing her ankles obsessively and living only on the back of the couch where the puppy couldn't reach her, she won out and I rehomed the baby. I think she was about 6 years old at the time. I tried simply all the tricks in the book to socialize them slowly and gradually and help her accept the puppy. Danny worked with her. But she was always antisocial to all other dogs, not just the Yorkie puppy, I guess partially due to her 3 lb. size & being sickly - and seemed to fear getting hurt by other dogs if they came too close. I don't know but she just went into a dive once Teddy got larger than she. She just never had enjoyed another dog being around from her puppyhood. My sister would visit with her poodle & we went to her house all the time - Jilly never warmed to him or to my son's dog at the time when they visited. She avoided dogs out on walks, had no canine buddies. But I think she was rare among Yorkies in that attitude. But being Jilly, she always got her way with me and sadly, Teddy went to another couple. Jilly was instantly herself again - eating, playing, no more ankle-chewing or living on the couch! She gained 4 oz. that first week Teddy was gone.

Tibbe on the other hand is 5 and I think at any point in his life he would accept another dog, puppy, cat or even a tiger! He loves all other critters and would just love a buddy. He doesn't even always chase all cats or squirrels - some he tries to get close to, I think to try to pal with, but they always run off. When my son brings his big dog to visit, Tibbe is over the moon happy & just can't leave Tex alone. He's not scared at all the other dog is 15 times his weight! Course we watch them like hawks(my son sits on the floor by Tex the whole time) to keep Tex from accidentally pawing Tibbe in play or gets up to play around much. He mostly plays with Tibbe from a lying-down position and lets Tibbe jump, sniff, kiss & romp all over him. I doubt Tibbe would change much in 2 more years and come to resent another dog at age 7. So if your dog tends to be friendly to other dogs, is not scared or standoffish to them, he'll probably love a new pack buddy to spice up his middle age & older years.
