Tarry black stool is a sign of bleeding in the upper digestive tract. Sometimes dogs can have allergic reactions to certain protein(s) & it can cause inflammation in the intestinal tract...often potatoes can trigger this as well as it is an inflammatory food & some dogs are allergic to it. A simple change in diet can prevent this.

Or has he had any chews lately, like bones? Anything that can cause an obstruction/perforation? If he's not vomiting, I wouldn't be too worried, a bland diet should settle his tummy, hope he'll feel better soon!

Of course, if the black tarry runny stools continue & he begins to vomit, please take him in asap. Which I'm sure you'll do.
