Yeah, I took home ec too, I guess they stopped offering it and it's such a useful class. Even if you never plan to sew, it gives you skills to know if you are looking at something that's well made or not. I had to hide my scissors from my children, but in 30 some years I only had to sharpen them once. They still look brand new. My avatar has my latest creation, "Little Miss Muffet."
