I think it'd be just fine to feed canned food alone if price wasn't an issue. We use some type of canned food to mix into Toki's breakfast kibble and have tried several of the Nature's Variety Instinct varieties (duck, lamb, and beef). We rotate with different varieties of Tiki Dog, Party Animal, and Weruva as well. I try to stick with grain-free canned foods but using grain-inclusive canned foods haven't created any kind of system upset for us.

I'd think that something drastically different in protein or fat content from the regular kibble might present more of an issue than choosing something with grains or mixing different types of food together.
