What are you using to keep the topknot in? As long as the topknot is not pulling on her scalp there would be no damage. Once you put your grooming band in you want to take the end of your comb and with one tooth under the band kind of pull the band up a little if it appears that the scalp is being pulled.

I don't always put bows in Gracie's topknot but I do put the grooming band in or some days I use the tiny scrunchie things that they sell in department stores. I usually use those at night.

Your dog should not be able to tell there is anything in the hair once your done placing the band. It has to be tight to hold the hair in place but not tight as in pulling the hair on the scalp.
