A chipped tooth is more susceptible to going bad with plaque and tartar, but depending on how much of it is chipped, it isn't always cause to remove it.
Some people are in favor of annual cleanings, others are not. I personally am not. Although a visual exam can't determine potential underlying problems that only an x-ray can reveal, I still think the decision has to be weighed for each dog individually.
