It does almost look like it had been shaved. Ummm. It could be a medication response, although his coat still looks healthy in terms of shine/sheen.
Has he had a full blood panel done yet? Thyroid problems could/can cause hair loss, but not usually in such a discrete pattern.
Food change?
Have you get clothes on him for long periods of time? Does he exit out a small doggy door to the backyard?
