Tips on Potty Training Hi,
I've had my new Yorkie for about 6 weeks and we have been working on the potty training with some hits and misses. I've read a lot as well as looked up lots of different information on potty training. One thing that just about every place says to crate, and they won't potty in it. Well mine has no idea about what everyone as well as all the experts say. She will potty in her crate and in fact I let her in the kitchen with the crate open and she was secured only in the kitchen with the crate open and at first had her little bed in the crate but there was a bit of space between door and bed which I had put a towel. She potty'd in and out of the crate BUT she poo'd IN her bed???
I also have had her tied to me but that didn't work either she still would potty the second my attention was diverted even for a second ... And as soon as she does I immediately take her outside. I've got her pretty much trained for first thing in the morning. We start out perfect every day but after that it goes terribly wrong. Not to mention she eats her poo if she does it inside. It's like she knows I'm not happy about her doing it inside (woo hoo) but if she does she eats it to get rid of evidence???
Today was so irritating, I was putting clothes on the line with the back door open she was outside with me and seemed to be pretty much staying outside while I went back and forth ansd I thought she was still outside and I was walking to the washing machine (which is in the kitchen) and there she is eating some poo and I look over and she had poo'd in on the kitchen floor she was right outside not two seconds right by me???
I am really getting frustrated and if she potty'd because she was shut in the kitchen and had to go but no one let her out then I completely understand. Maybe I'm just expecting too much. Think the biggest frustration is that the main advice from experts and people is to crate cause she won't go in it.... She does...and tends to potty in it or near it if it's closed. I gave up on the crate because of this. Once the bed was washed she sleeps on that. She doesn't have the run of the house when anyone's home she is only allowed in the kitchen and living room because they are tiled, so no worries in keeping clean.
I realise it will be a few months for her to get completely potty trained but I was hoping she got the connection that it needs to be done outside a lot sooner then that. Figuring the tweaking due to someone not getting signals from her that she needs to go would be the reason of the mishaps. She was kept with the breeder until she was 12 weeks but I suspect the breeder didn't let her out of her crate much at all which would be why she tends to potty in the crate. Any advice would be much appreciated! |
