My sister had a Great Pyranees who got a terrible ear infection. She had him chained at times to keep him from running in the road, but he broke the chain and ran out into the road. My daughter ran desperately after this sweet animal and tried to save him. She had picked up the chain, but the dog was still in the road and a car was coming at a high rate of speed. My daughter had no choice but to drop the chain. However, the dog did not get out of the road and in spite of there being clear visibility, the driver never slowed or tried to avoid hitting the dog. The car wheels ran over the chain, pinning the dog to the spot and causing him to get the full impact of the car. It threw the dog completely up in the air and onto the other side of the road. The car never slowed, but continued on its way with the broken part of the chain and collar wrapped around its wheel well. The dog ran up our driveway and forced himself into a small rabbit hutch we had, terrified, hurting and in shock. We had to tear apart the cage to get him out and rush him to the vet. Surprisingly, the only injuries to the dog were severe bruising and a collapsed lung. We took the dog to live with us, inside a fenced yard and he lived many happy more years. |
