A bland diet wouldn't hurt for a few days. String beans (4-6 per meal) can add fiber and make poos softer. Maybe smaller meals would help. Sounds like he may be having excess gas? Try holding him upright a few minutes right after he eats, this will help any gas to escape... kind of like burping a baby.

Also, an xray would be good to rule out things like foreign bodies, and give the vet a better idea of what's going on with him.

Also, I'd have the vet send off a fecal sample to the lab for analysis. An imbalance of bacteria could cause this. Also ask the vet about getting him on probiotics. This will flood his gut with good bacteria and will aid in his digestion.
