Our sweet Charlie boy did that off and on for the last few years of his life. The vet had us switch him to Prescription Diet K/D (for kidneys), we did a combination of both hard and soft food. It really did help. We too kept a water proof pad and blanket on "his spot" on our ottomon, as well as one on the bed, where he slept with us. Someone told me about belly belts too, which may help (though I can't comment, as we never resorted to using those). Good luck and take care.
