I'd also be concerned that the dog had an expensive medical problem and that is why they are selling her. Any rehomed dog purchase should be contingent on a clean vet report, including bloodwork and examination of the knees. Keep saving and check with some YTCA breeders in your area for dogs that they may be selling.
BIG hugs to you, I'm so sorry that this fell through but you may have just been spared a host of problems.
