We go out of town almost every Christmas to visit my family in NY, Christmas is not a day it's a season and IMHO that starts right after Thanksgiving and goes until the weekend after New Years so tell him that. Also you can do a lot with a little so start looking at garage sales,Thrift stores, dollar stores, Big Lots. etc. Start with a full prelit 4 or 4.5' tree and put it on a nice size table top, you will get a lot of bang for your buck.
