Hi there. In order to be sucessful at crate training you will need your family to all be on the same page. If one member takes the puppy out when he is whining he will continue to do that to get out. Do you sleep with the crate in your room? I found that the first week or so, my puppy slept best in his crate when he was near my bed and could see me. If he made any complaints I would gently tap on the crate and tell him quiet and he would quieten down. He now sleeps in his crate for 8 - 9 hours at night.
I also made sure he had a cuddly stuffed toy and a ticking alarm clock in his bed for the first little while.
