A lot of foods are made at Diamond or use their facilities but aren't a diamond brand food. In other words, Natural Balance ships in their OWN ingredients to the plant (for example, the chicken that goes into Diamond products is NOT the same grade chicken that goes into Natural Balance).
There is only a handful of companies that
actually manufacture their own food and don't outsource to a different companies manufacturing plant. It helps them keep their food cost down. Precise, Fromm, and Lotus, for example, all have their own manufacturing plant. And Lotus even made it's own cannery because apparently they couldn't find anything that they liked standard wise... that's why Champion doesn't make canned foods. They don't have the abilities to do it, and do not want to outsource somewhere else.
I do agree it's getting darn near impossible to find a trustworthy company but theyr'e out there. The ones listed above (Fromm, Precise, Lotus) are all, IMO, pretty great.
A few others that come to mind... Midwestern Pet Foods (Earthborn, Pro Pac) have their own facility, Science Diet has it's own, Champion... *possibly* Nutrisource but don't quote me on that!
But... there are still a fairly good number of companies that are trustworthy for dog food... even if they've had a recall or an ingredient issue in the past, I try to look at how they've dealt with it and what has happened since first and foremost. But I do think picking the company first is very important rather than just looking at a fancy ingredient list (which I used to do).
