My vet says the mucus and loose stools can be caused by drainage from an upper respiratory infection. He treats it with anti-biotics. You should definitely take a sample to the vet if you see blood in it. My older Yorkie had a bout with this, and became lathargic and dehydrated and ended up in the hospital with and IV & high levels of antibiotics.

Better safe than sorry, contact your vet A.S.A.P. I could save you money in the long run. The overnight stay and IV were expensive.
