A good sized cat can do the same thing. Opossum's are nocturnal so unless you are out really early or at night you usually do not see them, just like skunks.
The main thing is they are not attack animals. They feed off the land and road kill. They don't attack unless they feel threatened. Keep the dogs away and you won't have a problem with a opossum.
