It really is a good idea to show them the new item. Let them sniff the item and investigate (beware my boys will pee on it, if it is an outside / garden thing and I show it to them outside).
The last time my gang did a fear bark and stranger alert (all the while backing up) was because of my new crock pot on the counter. I had to put Gracie up on the counter and let her sniff it. Then all was calm again.
Rubin has a trash thing too he will bark if the trash sticks out above the top of the can. I just empty it. LOL I don't know why it bugs him but it does.
