I would not count on neutering a 6yr old to stop any marking habits that have been ingrained for 6 years or so. Only retraining and that over probably at least 6months will have the best chance of success.

Do some research on here and other websites, of the benefit in particular of neutering males. Then armed with more information from the research you have read, have a frank talk with your vet, about the "actual" health benefits for neutering your male at this point in time.
