Many moons ago I designed bridal gowns. I took a sabbatical from sewing for 2 years and just now getting back into it (thanks to the GE).
I don't really use patterns. I make my own according to the measurements of the dog and depending on what I'm making exactly. I tend to get a better fit this way.
I, too, prefer the slip on style dresses over the velcro. Gabby's hair gets tangled in velcro and she hates the sound of it.
