Desprate for advice on complicated housebreaking situation First of all I just want to thank anyone whom can provide advice, direction or any other strategies to help me make some progress with my yorkie, Loki. He is 100% Yorkshire Terrier, and he was born on May 5 2012.
Short version: No matter how much positive and negative reinforcement he gets, or how much time we dedicate, he seems to be making reverse progress. He pees/poos in his cage and if the crate is not available in a number of other spots. We are doing everything right, but hes just not understanding.
My issue pertains to housebreaking and I believe it may be somewhat unique. I will describe the facts as directly and simply as I can in hopes of some direction.
1. Loki refuses to go pee/poo outside on the ground. I spend all day outside with him running around, playing, walking, etc and he will hold it all day until we return home.
2. We have somewhat successfully trained him to pee (and if we get lucky) poo on a pee pad indoors, we have transitioned him outside but are struggling with getting him to use the peepad while he's outside.
3. We have a small see-through fence that we wrap around the peepad and we typically bring a chair outside and sit with him saying the key words (peepee) which he somewhat understands as the cue (After about 4 weeks of having him) and furthermore, I immediately reward him with extreme praise and 1 treat (that I keep in my pocket).
4. I have trained a puppy before, there is no limit to my willpower and I will devote as much time as needed to help Loki learn to use the potty outside.
5. He regularly goes pee/poo indoors. we use odor remover and even the 'keep pets away' spray in the spots he uses.
6. His favorite place to go is his crate, even if hes locked up for a very short time. If hes not locked up he will literally open his crate from the outside (theres a toy hanging from the door he pulls) to get inside to pee. It's sooo weird.
7. Most of the time we sit outside with him outside (the back of my apartment is an empty parking lot) for up to 1 hour waiting for him to go.
8. He has never, ever, pee'd or poo'd outside. I believe he thinks its bad.. i don't know what to do!
HELP !
