Leaving strange dogs alone is never a suitable option.
It will, as everyone says, take time. I would definitely observe their interactions over a period of months before even thinking of leaving them alone together. If you must leave them alone, crate the baby in a closed room, where the first cannot get to her to bark or otherwise intimidate her.
