Keeping a clean nest is not always a given. Some pups take a long time to learn our rules. 'I peed on it, it is mine.' can be Doggy thinking, if it smells like me it is mine. Some dogs, not just puppies will lay on pee pads or chew belly bands and sniff butts with glee. Dogs are not people. We are turned off by the smell of vomit, urine, and feces, but dogs find them interesting messages and (uck) sometimes tasty snacks. In fact most dogs love kitty poo.
All of my puppies walked in pee and poo when they were young. Even human infants will play with their own poo. We teach our children what is acceptable. And the Mama dog teaches acceptable behavior to her pups. If she doesn't, we must teach the puppy.
I suggest using a litter pan for the pee pad this gives the potty place real boundaries. When she lays on her bed or takes a toy to her bed, praise with GOOD BED. This starts teaching her to go to her Bed. Later this will become an automatic behavior, you will be able to point and say 'Go To Bed" and she will promptly go to her bed. Her bed is always a good, safe, happy place that smells like Mama.
You can use a hand sized towel that smells like you on her bed. When you want her to get in her crate put the towel in there point and say the cue words 'Go To Bed'. She will learn that it is good to play, eat, get treats and sleep on her bed. The towel can also be used under her food bowl at feeding time. I suggest buying three or more identical hand towels, so when dirty ones are being washed you have enough. It also makes sense to buy a matching bath towel for her baths. Choosing a different color from the people towels is also perk. It is simple to put your sent on them, just rub against your face, arm pits, feet or your neck. I have found what we call the Mama towel can be very comforting to a puppy in their bed, car seat, and X-pen. One last thing, just like real children Yorkies have to learn the rules of their family , be patient. Good training lasts a life time. Hope this helps.
