Not to be a downer, but my dads JRT mix is not able to peacefully co exist with the cats. The cats live upstairs and the dogs live downstairs. We have a gate at the top of the steps.

The cats come down during the night when the dogs are locked in bedroom, and sometimes during the day, but they can quickly get away. Lilly, the JRT, will full on attack, and bark, it's an all out WAR. I believe she would hurt them if given the chance. They are quicker than her though.

Jackson is okay... but I'd never want to live with cats & him. He has the ability to be calm around them, especially if I have food his focus is on the food, but it's his instinct to chase them when they run. I don't think he would ever hurt them tho. He's also been known to sleep near them during the night etc. But it can be a task sometimes. At night by himself he is the best with them... when all 3 dogs are around, they egg each other on. Whenever there is a "meow" heard, all 3 dogs go running and barking to the top of the steps. It's quite annoying and hasn't gotten any better in 3 years lol.

Some terriers cannot peacefully co-exist with cats.
