In our case, it was from a food allergy to chicken. Hot Rod was really itchy and flaky when we first got him and we didn't know what it was. Just by accident we figured out it was from chicken.

I have read that chicken can cause allergies quite frequently. I might start there and if that didn't work, try elimating other types of foods one at a time, giving each item some time to get out of his system. Good luck.
