Not sure if its normal but I would never have my dog go into surgery with out having blood work first. My Aunts and Uncles dog was going in for her spay and they didn't know to get blood work done but I talked to them the day before so they told the vet they wanted it done and they found out she had a liver problem and could have had some complications if they just went ahead and did the spay with out the blood work.
