I wouldn't worry about him looking 'silly'...it's temporary, and tape doesn't give an elegant look...lol I'd want to trim and tape so as not to harm his ears as my big concern...lol. As was suggested, there are lots of Yorkie websites and YouTube videos with instructions, and several different ways demonstrated. You definitely do not want to cut the ear leather or allow it to get folded under the tape. Here is one to get you started.
