I am a type 1 diabetic. There are alot of sugar subs out there and each one reacts differently with each person.
Sugar Alcohols will not do anything to me if I only eat one or two hard candies, or a carbsmart ice cream bar. But If I eat three or four candies then there can be issues. The other thing I have discovered is that over time, I have had less issues of any kind because I use less now.
The other sugar substitutes you just have to experiment with.
I can do Malitol very well with 0 side effects and xylitol with 0 as long as I don't over indulge. (If the food containing it is part of a big meal all the better), but if I eat anything with sorbitol I am doubled over with discomfort. So the only gum I can chew is Ice Cubes by Icebreakers. No sorbitol in that one. All the others have the sorbitol. Ice Cubes has helped when I want to snack but don't want an extra shot to have a snack.
The sugar subs for coffee, Pink, yellow, blue packaging and the one called stevia now they don't bug me at all. But each tastes a bit different.
It is a trial and error. I find that the sugar alcohols have never made my BS rise and for that I am grateful. As a type one if my BS goes up too gast or I misjudge the carbs I eat it is another shot.
