The metal combs on toplinepets.com work well. I have 6" and 4" combs. I use the small one for her face, topknot and legs. I use the bigger one for her body. If you take a couple of minutes a day to comb your pet you will find you do not have the matting problem. I also have the small Maden pin brush that I use after all her tangles are taken out by the comb.

A young puppy should be combed at least twice a day if it looks like it needs it or not. That way the puppy will learn to accept the grooming from a young age and will not fight you when it is older and really needs more grooming.

A good all natural shampoo and conditioner are a must and a spray on conditioner will help prevent tangles between baths. I give Gracie a bath once a week. It keeps her fur silky smooth and smelling nice. I spray her ends when I comb her daily to get through any tangles more easily.

If your dog is so matted that you cannot comb the mats out you may need to go to a groomer to get him shaved. Once the mats are gone combs him at least once or twice daily to keep his fur from getting that way again.
