Combine that with a thick, heavy coat, and you will have floppy, hair ladened ears! If the coat is fine silk and the ears are not heavy, they will stand with a fine silky hairy ear......but if the silky coat has any weight to it, it can cause delicate ears to fall over.....so trimming the top 1/3 would be of great assistance in keeping those ears upright! Then, just to make me out a bonifide liar, I look up and see my Skylar's ears, and notice her beautiful straight, erect ears, that have not been shaved since she was about 14 weeks old....she has a silky coat, and has not required her ears shaved at all for over a year! So I guess you look at YOUR babies ears, and if they are hairy and they are beginnng to drop over, I would think you need to "lighten the load" and shave them!
LOL...

But, a question, too. How thick is a Yorkie ear when it is "too thick" to stand? Are the ears super thin like feline ears when they are 'correct' to stand? Also, how would a person tell if the ear leather was "broken"...or is this something a vet would have to determine? I see a lot about Yorkie ears standing, but not much about the actual 'science' of why they stand. Just curious...no biggie.
