I always have them removed as newborn when vet does the tails. It is less painful at that age and better to avoids any issues in the long run.

We had a Chow years back that had to have them removed when he was about three. They were always getting caught on his chain. It was very painful for him and hard to see him in pain when it happened. The horrifying sound of him in pain was just too much. There was no other choice, it had to be done, no question.
