Usually, you have to keep the hair shaved off the top 1/3 of the ear. There are alot of factors that play into this though...if the ear leather is thick and heavy, and you are fortunate enough to have them standing up at all, you are going to have to do everything you can to encourage that to continue! Combine that with a thick, heavy coat, and you will have floppy, hair ladened ears! If the coat is fine silk and the ears are not heavy, they will stand with a fine silky hairy ear......but if the silky coat has any weight to it, it can cause delicate ears to fall over.....so trimming the top 1/3 would be of great assistance in keeping those ears upright! Then, just to make me out a bonifide liar, I look up and see my Skylar's ears, and notice her beautiful straight, erect ears, that have not been shaved since she was about 14 weeks old....she has a silky coat, and has not required her ears shaved at all for over a year! So I guess you look at YOUR babies ears, and if they are hairy and they are beginnng to drop over, I would think you need to "lighten the load" and shave them!
